Don’t Inoculate Your Church Against Men’s Ministry
Are you called to lead a ministry to men? If so, here are a few thoughts to consider….
IT TAKES A LONG TIME
How long does it take to implement a successful men’s ministry program? It takes a long time. Even google.com, arguably one of the speediest success stories in corporate history, took over four years just to go live online. At Man in the Mirror, we have seen nothing to suggest there are any shortcuts for men’s ministry. There really are no shortcuts. A shortcut takes years to develop.
TWO-THIRDS OF ALL PROGRAMS FAIL
Research indicates that, as a rule of thumb, about 2/3 rd of program implementations fail. How does it happen? Here are a few reasons: Leaders think they can wing it. They don’t put in the time required. They underestimate how long it takes to make a disciple. They underestimate how long it takes to get a program going. They underestimate the resistance to change they encounter. They are not equipped. They don’t get training because they think, “This should be pretty easy. How hard could it be?”
SO WHAT IF YOU FAIL?
Every time a men’s ministry fails, it’s like a little inoculation. The next leader who wants to build a men’s ministry encounters increased resistance. After three or four such failed attempts, the church’s resistance is complete and impenetrable. Men’s ministry gets the reputation of “a loser.” The pastor has decided, “That will never work here.” Actually, it will, but a made up mind is almost impossible to change.
GIVE IT TEN YEARS OR NOTHING
Research seems to indicate that unless a leader devotes ten or more years to an initiative, success is unlikely. So unless you are willing to devote ten or more years to building a men’s program, it would be better for the Christian Men’s Movement if you didn’t start. These are serious times that require serious leaders willing to devote serious effort for a serious length of time.
GET PROFESSIONAL TRAINING
No man would think he could be effective in his business without training. No man would think a new business program could be successfully launched without allocating people, budget, and training. The rules are no different for starting an effective men’s ministry. Yes, we depend on prayer and the sovereignty of God. On the other hand, we do not presume upon God by neglecting our duty to use our brains. Get some help. After all, ten years would be a long time to wing it.
