Balance, Bible, the Blessing
Okay, good response! So I'll start feeding "70 Things Every Man Needs to Know" from Pastoring Men to you a few at a time!
Men, today let's talk about what it means to lead a balanced life. The 50th wedding anniversary party of a Christian friend was attended by a) his happy wife, b) his children (some of whom flew in), c) his pastor who thought enough of him to comment on his life, and d) about 40 friends. In his case, no one from the office. And he was very happy. Are you living as though a happy wife, children who still want to be around you, a pastor who would be willing to say something nice about you, and about 40 friends would be a great achievement? What more can a man really want?
Men, today let's talk about the importance of the Bible. Many of us are stuck in a rut, feeling defeated because we haven't tapped into the power of the Bible. Jesus put it this way: "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures and you do not know the power of God." Billy Graham's ministry never really caught on until one day, on a mountain in California, he laid his open Bible on a stump and said, "Oh, Lord, I do not understand everything in that book, but I accept it by faith as Your Word." Don't just own your Bible. Let your Bible own you.
3. The Blessing
Men, today let's talk about giving the blessing to our children. Biblically, to bless means "to endow with power for success, prosperity, fertility, longevity." Jacob cheated his brother out of his father's blessing. Their father, Isaac, had to tell Esau that he had already given the blessing to Jacob. The Bible says, "When Esau heard his father's words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, 'Bless me--me too, my father!' Sons and daughters need the approval of their fathers. A father's blessing is like your seal of approval.
