Calling, Change, Character of God
We're looking at "70 Things Every Man Needs to Know" from the last chapter of Pastoring Men. Here are the next three....
Men, today I want us to think about our work. The Bible teaches that every vocation is a calling that is holy to God.The Bible makes no distinction between sacred and secular work. The Bible is crystal clear that to be a pastor or Christian missionary is no higher calling than to be a businessman, a plumber or anything else. Many men who sense the desire to serve God assume they must go into the ministry. That is rarely the case. For 99% of us, God probably wants us right where we are, doing what we already do, but differently--with a whole new orientation to pleasing Christ. For the Christian, all of life is "spiritual."
Men, today let's talk about how we can change our lives. Change means "to make something different from what it is or would be, if left alone." How do men change? Our part is a conviction to change, not to conform to the world any longer, and a full surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. God's part is to bring about transformation. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says, "And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." Let's fix our eyes on Jesus--he is the perfect example of a man.
9. Character of God
Men, today let's talk about the character of God. One of the most liberating experiences we can have is to meditate on the attributes of God. When I meditate on God, I feel His power in my soul. I've made a list of 60 of God's attributes--from holiness to love; from Creator, to the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Consider making your own list that brings you comfort or attributes you want to learn more about. Put it somewhere handy. I keep my list in my Bible. Pull it out when, because of troubles, you need a reminder of God's greatness and goodness.
Yours for changed lives,
