You and Your Men Are Under God’s Protection
Are you a pet person? There are a lot of pet people in the world. My parents were pet people. I was a prisoner of pet people because we had all kinds of pets. We had dogs, cats, horses, and cows. When I became a man, I had to decide if I would be a pet person, or not, and my wife decided that I would be one.
There are big dog people, and there are little dog people. Of course, there are dog people and cat people (and there are tarantula people, too), but mostly you have big dog people and little dog people. How about you?
I was always a big dog person. We had a beautiful, yellow lab, Katie. Then we bought a little poofy, frou-frou lap dog for middle-aged women. It’s a Bichon Frise – if you know what that is. She’s a little white, fluff ball named Annie. This dog has had more maladies. Not long ago this cute little dog, which is like a pogo stick that jumps everywhere, pulled a ligament in one of its legs. So, then we had to have surgery, and the surgery cost about four times as much as the dog cost. I was doing the math, and I kept saying to my wife, Patsy, “You know, there are a lot of things they don’t tell you at the pet store.”
l must tell you I have really fallen in love with this little dog. I was trying to think what is it about this little dog that I just love so much. To be honest with you, the dog is completely selfish. She licks you and smiles innocently only because it wants to play and get attention. Her mission is completely about getting involved in play and having a party.
Yet, there is just something about this little dog. This dog can do nothing for me – except give me some pleasure. But my pleasure is really not my pleasure. My pleasure is the pleasure I take in seeing the dog have pleasure – if that makes sense! So, I am thinking what is it about this dog I love so much? I can’t tell you, but I can tell you this: that dog is under my protection. This dog had the surgery, and I will take care of whatever other problems come this little dog’s way because I unconditionally love this little bundle of energy.
That’s a good metaphor for us to keep in mind as we try to understand how God sees us and thinks about us. God has brought us under His protection because God feels about us in a way very similar to how we might feel about a beloved pet. It’s analogous thinking, so you can’t push it too far. But God has this unconditional love for us that forms the backdrop for every detail of our relationship with Him. Just keep that in the back of your mind today: that you are under God’s protection.
To God be the glory for the great things He has done and continues to do!
