Unexamined Life: 70 Things Every Man Needs to Know

To lead an unexamined life means to rush from task to busy task but not call enough time-outs to reflect on life’s larger meaning and purpose. Plato wrote, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Most men have not carefully chiseled their worldview by a personal search for truth and obedience to God and His Word. They are not thinking deeply about their lives.
Scripture exhorts, “Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord” (Lamentations 3:40). Pastoring men is all about holding up a mirror in front of men so they can examine their lives.
Here’s a great story to illustrate leading an unexamined life. Many people had prayed for Evan’s salvation over many years. He traveled to Texas to spend a day making calls with one of his salesmen. At the end of the day his salesman, Steve, walked Evan into the airport to catch his plane back to the Midwest.
As they parted, Steve said, “Evan, you’re amazing the way you sell our product. You’re brilliant. But as smart as you are, you baffle me. You don’t have a clue about where you came from, you don’t have a clue where you’re going, and you don’t have a clue about your purpose in life.”
During the flight home, Evan stared out the window in silence. And in the months that followed, he kept hearing Steve’s searing comments over and over. In February of the following year, Evan was invited to an evangelistic event where he gave his life to Jesus Christ. Two months later he had a heart attack and needed bypass surgery.
The night before the surgery, he took his wife out to dinner. Evan, only forty-four years old, described his feelings of incredible peace and calm. His wife, Tracie, on the other hand, was a basket case. Evan took her hand and echoed the words he had heard only months earlier. “Tracie, you’re amazing when it comes to education. You’re brilliant. But as smart as you are, you baffle me. You don’t have a clue about where you came from, you don’t have a clue where you are going, and you don’t have a clue about your purpose in life.”
Tracie stared out the window in silence.
