471 – How Sovereignty and Free Will Work Together
As with the prodigal son, when we abandon God, He does not abandon us. Instead, He is willing to orchestrate a world-wide famine if that’s what it takes to bring us to our senses.
In other words, He will make our lives so miserable that we turn to Him of our own free will. That’s because “futility” is the chief tool by which God sovereignly draws us to Himself of our own free will. Here it is from the Bible:
For the creation (us) was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him (God) who subjected it, (why?) in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. (Romans 8:20-21)
We do have free will. Fortunately, God loves us enough to steer our free will to, or back to, Him by molding our circumstances, just like any loving father would do.
Sovereignty and free will are not at all difficult to understand in this light.
God is sovereignly orchestrating all human events to bring us into right relationship with Him, and right relationship with each other. And futility is His chief tool.
