Are All Who Call Themselves Christian, Christian?
According to the most recent American Religious Identification Survey, approximately 77% of Americans consider themselves Christian. Of course, the “profession” rate will always be higher than the “participation” rate. But given the condition of the American family, the state of business ethics, frivolous entertainments, shallow manners, pornographic use, offensive language, and cheating on everything from taxes to grades, is it possible that three out of every four people you will walk or drive by today is a Christian?
It is not a new question. Soren Kierkegaard, the 19 th century Danish philosopher, lamented over the great gulf between biblical Christianity and what he saw in the church of his day. He asked, “Are all that call themselves Christian, Christian?”
In our day we have in many ways gutted the gospel to appear relevant, offering salvation without repentance and the resurrection without the cross.
No, not all who call themselves Christian are Christian. Some of the good men that you work next to who call themselves Christian are NOT Christian! What can we do to help people who think they are already Christian but are not?
Dwight L. Moody once said, “Before you get a man saved, you must first get a man lost.” We need to tell men that if they are relying on their religiosity, if they are relying on their morality, if they’re relying on being a good person, leading a good life, or doing good deeds, they must be born again!
A big part of my life’s work is to teach Christianity to men who are convinced they are already Christians. To teach “Christian” religion we must inspire men to seek the God who is, not merely the God they want. Jesus is the God who is. He said, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again” (John 3:3).
Are you teaching Christianity to men convinced they are already Christians? If yes, be encouraged…nothing we do has more potential to change the world. If not, please prayerfully consider enlisting in the Battle for Men’s Souls.
