558 – A Key to Godliness For Young Men
Recently, I was asked to write a letter for a young man’s eighteenth birthday. The idea was to answer the question, “What is one key to being a godly man that a young man needs to remember?” Here’s what I wrote…
Happy 18th Birthday. And congratulations on reaching the age many consider the threshold into manhood. The way I see it, though, is that you have always been wise beyond your years, and most certainly have been a man for many years already.
There are so many things a man in his late teens and twenties wants and needs to know. I think the key to getting those things right is to become an expert on what the Bible says about manhood.
I’ve worked with and interacted with lots of people, such as architects, contractors, Realtors, mechanical engineers, air conditioning repairmen, machine shop owners, auto mechanics, executive recruiters, professors, IT specialists, healthcare professionals, soldiers, policemen, and paramedics. The ones I admire and trust are the ones who have invested the time to become experts.
What is an expert? Many things, but someone who knows what they’re talking about and what they’re doing. If you ask an expert a question, they will nail the answer.
You can become a godly man by becoming an expert on life’s big questions, like…
Become an expert on biblical manhood. That’s the key to being a godly man that I would encourage you to remember. A practical idea is to read one chapter of Proverbs every day–you can repeat monthly. I did that for about ten years straight–and ended up memorizing dozens of them that still come to mind daily.
We’re all very proud of you, (name).
With love in Christ,
