The Power of a Book

Giving men a book to read has been a catalyst for personal growth, spiritual development, and transformative change in their lives.

What do you read? We all may see thousands of words a day. But what do you actually slow down to read? What have you read so well that you can tell someone else about it or discuss its truth and impact on your life?
Many of us have become overly comfortable with short bits of information like two-minute cable news stories, five-sentence updates on social media, quick tweets, or just pictures with captions.

However, our brains are made for more and can bask in the flowing words of a well-written book. Or perhaps study the structure and lessons of a chapter of Scripture or meditate deeply on a few verses to “write” the Word on your heart. Men desperately need this for their minds, hearts, and souls to develop and flourish.

At Man in the Mirror, we’ve always believed in the power of Christian literature to change lives. Patrick Morley, our founder, has written more than 20 books since his debut in 1989 with “The Man in the Mirror.” Recently, he published a revised edition of “A Man’s Guide to Spiritual Disciplines” and has a new book coming out in 2024 (and he’s not done!).

Reaching Millions Of Men

For 23 years, we’ve made books available for churches to distribute to every man in their church for over 80% off the cover price through our Books by the Box program. By buying books in boxes of 12 or 48, we have supported leaders who want to reach men on Father’s Day, start small groups, or dive deeper into topics related to Christian manhood. Over 10 million high-quality Christian books have been distributed since 1999.

THE BIG IDEA: “It’s amazing how a man will get hold of a book, and then God uses the book to hold of that man.” – Patrick Morley

Frustrated with a failing business and marriage, I joined a group of men 23 years ago for a weekly meeting to discuss “The Man in the Mirror,” which we got from a Books by the Box campaign. The book changed my life with chapters on the rat race, integrity, marriage, and fatherhood. Just ask my wife!

Let me invite you to change some men’s lives yourself this Father’s Day. Order Books by the Box and give them to every man you care about—your co-workers, friends, family members, small group, or your entire church! Watch what happens when a man slows down and reads, engages in discussions with friends, and devotes himself to a deeper relationship with God.

Discipleship changes everything.
