What Are Spiritual Gifts?

Every one of us has been uniquely gifted by God to serve His kingdom. These gifts aren’t simply talents or personality traits—they are supernatural empowerments given by the Holy Spirit to build up the church and glorify Christ. Paul lays it out clearly in 1 Corinthians 12:4-7:

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

These gifts aren’t meant for personal gain or recognition. They exist so that we can strengthen our brothers, serve our communities, and lead others to Christ. When we understand and use them, we step into the role God has designed for us as men of faith.

Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts

Maybe you’ve never thought much about your spiritual gifts, or perhaps you’ve been unsure about how to identify them. The first step in exploring and using your gifts is prayer. Ask God to reveal how He has uniquely equipped you. Then, look at your passions and experiences. Where do you naturally find joy in serving others? What kinds of ministry work energize you rather than drain you? Often, our gifts align with the burdens God has placed on our hearts.

Another way to uncover your gifts is through the feedback of other believers. We don’t always see ourselves clearly, but our brothers in Christ can more easily recognize where we thrive. If you’ve had men in your church tell you that you have a gift for leadership, teaching, or encouragement, take that to heart. Their insights can help confirm what God is already showing you.

Putting Your Gifts to Work

Once you understand your gifts more clearly, the real challenge begins—putting them into action. Sitting on your gifts is like getting a new set of tools and never opening the toolbox. James 1:22 reminds us to “be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” Our faith is meant to be active, and our gifts are meant to be used.

If you have the gift of teaching, step up to lead a Bible study or make a commitment to mentor younger men in the faith. If you’re wired for encouragement, be intentional about lifting up your brothers who are struggling. If leadership is your strength, take responsibility in your church or community to help guide others in Christ’s direction. The key is not waiting for the perfect moment but stepping out in faith and letting God work through you.

Avoiding the Comparison Trap

One of the biggest obstacles we face as men is the temptation to compare ourselves to others. Maybe you admire the boldness of your preacher or the deep wisdom of an elder and feel like your gifts don’t measure up. But God doesn’t make mistakes in how He distributes spiritual gifts. Romans 12:6 says, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.”

Your gifts, whatever they may be, are essential to the body of Christ. The church isn’t built on a handful of superstars but on the faithful service of many men using their gifts in obedience. Instead of wishing for a different gift, embrace the one God has given you and use it with confidence.

Growing in Your Gifts

Spiritual gifts aren’t static. They develop and mature as we walk with Christ and step into new opportunities. Just like working out at the gym, the more we exercise our gifts, the stronger they become. And how do we do that? By being open to challenges, seeking godly mentorship, and continuously asking the Holy Spirit to refine and grow us as we feel our way forward.

If you feel unsure about using your gifts, that’s okay. Growth takes time. The important thing is to start somewhere. Serve where you can, be willing to learn, and trust that God will equip you for the work He calls you to do.

Stepping Up

God has entrusted us with spiritual gifts, not for our own benefit but to advance His kingdom. As Christian men, we have a responsibility to lead, serve, and disciple others. The church is strongest when every man steps up and uses his gifts with faith and courage.

If you haven’t yet discovered your spiritual gifts, seek them out. If you know what they are but haven’t been using them, start today. And if you’ve been actively serving, challenge yourself to grow even more. We are all called to be faithful stewards of what God has given us. Let’s make sure we are putting His gifts to good use.
