To journey to living out biblical manhood wouldn’t work very well if we never checked the map. And yet, that’s what some of us do, neglecting Bible study day after day with promises to get around to it when we’re less busy (all while secretly feeling that we already know what we need to know). As any adventurer could tell you, though, it’s a huge mistake to embark on a long and perilous quest without absorbing all the wisdom and deep knowledge of the terrain that a good guide can provide.

The Bible isn’t just another book; it’s the foundation of our faith and the guide for how we are called to lead, love, and serve. And though it’s easy to start reading, let’s be honest: studying Scripture effectively doesn’t always come naturally. Many times, we open it up, read a few verses, and walk away virtually unchanged, unsure of how to apply what we just read. That’s why we need a solid approach to studying God’s Word, one that helps us grow in wisdom and strengthens us as men of faith.

Prepare Your Mind

First, we need to approach Bible study with the right mindset. Spending time in the Word isn’t about checking a religious box on our “To Do” list or skimming through Scripture just to say we did it. It’s about seeking transformation. James 1:22 reminds us, “Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” If we aren’t intentional about applying what we read, we’re missing the entire point of Bible study. Studying Scripture effectively means reading with a heart that’s ready to be challenged and changed.

Ask God’s Blessing on Your Study

Prayer is the ideal starting point. Before we dive into the Word, we should ask God for wisdom and understanding. The Holy Spirit is our ultimate teacher, illuminating truth and helping us discern how to apply it in our lives. As 2 Timothy 3:16-17 tells us, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” We’re not left to figure this out on our own; God equips us through His Word and the illumination provided by the Holy Spirit when we come to Him with a humble and teachable spirit.

Seek Understanding Without Agenda

Context is everything. It’s easy to pluck a verse out of the Bible and make it say what we want. Some of the worst decisions and positions in history have been propped up by people cherry-picking Bible verses with an ungodly agenda. True understanding, on the other hand, comes from reading Scripture in context. Who was the author writing to? What was happening at the time? What is the broader message of the passage? Taking time to understand these things helps us to see how Scripture applied to the people then and to apply it accurately to our own lives, rather than bending it to fit our own perspectives.

Be Consistent

Consistency unlocks spiritual gains. Just like we wouldn’t hit the gym once a month and expect to get strong, we can’t expect spiritual growth if we only open the Bible occasionally. Developing a daily or consistent habit of study builds our spiritual endurance and helps us stay grounded in truth. Returning to God’s Word regularly allows the Spirit to steadily change and refine us over time, bringing us more in line with God’s will. It doesn’t have to be complicated—even committing to one chapter a day with focused reflection can make an amazing difference in your faith, your knowledge, and your closeness with the Lord.

Meditate on the Truth

Meditation and memorization matter. When we take the time to dwell on a passage and commit it to memory, we allow God’s Word to take root and grow in our hearts. This is especially important when facing challenges, temptations, or decisions. Having Scripture stored up in our minds helps us respond with wisdom instead of reacting emotionally. Think about how Jesus countered temptation in the wilderness. He didn’t rely on human wisdom but quoted Scripture with authority.

Study in Community

Discussion and accountability sharpen us. We weren’t meant to walk this journey all alone. Your personal study practice can often be enriched by joining others in pursuing scriptural understanding. Studying the Bible with other men provides greater encouragement, increased accountability, and fresh insight. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” A trusted group of brothers can challenge us to dig deeper for understanding and hold us accountable to living out what we learn.

Be Lifelong Learners

Ultimately, “good” Bible Study is about transformation, not just information. The goal isn’t to become experts in theology; it’s to become men who are shaped by God’s truth, who lead our families with wisdom, serve others with humility, and stand firm in faith no matter what comes our way. When we commit to studying Scripture with an open heart and a disciplined mind, we equip ourselves to be the men God has called us to be.
